19 looks that prove Rihanna invented modern maternity style

It’s hard to overstate the influence Rihanna has had on what famous people want to wear when they are expecting a child. From the autumn/winter 1996 Chanel puffer jacket she wore to reveal her first pregnancy in 2022, to the Loewe bodysuit she chose to announce her second at the 2023 Super Bowl, the musician has managed to rewrite the maternity rule book because she continues to dress like – gasp! – someone who isn’t pregnant at all. (Why purchase an elasticated waistband when you can just unbutton your jeans, or wear off-the-runway Saint Laurent?)
Since announcing her third pregnancy at the 2025 Met Gala in Marc Jacobs tailoring, Rihanna, who is mother to RZA, three, and Riot Rose, two, has been spied on the front row for Jonathan Anderson’s debut at Dior (her toddlers got first dibs on his menswear), wearing bump-sculpting Balmain summer dresses and gothic Ann Demeulemeester suiting, and a suite of custom Alaïa bodycon gowns – proving once again that maternity style is just… style.
Below, revisit some of the star’s best maternity looks to date.
