The Polka Dot Manicure Trend
What is there to say about polka dots that hasn’t already been said by your childhood bestie’s bedroom walls? They’re fun, they’re flirty, and they’re about as simple as nail art can get.
Celebrity manicurist Zola Ganzorigt was behind two of the polka dotted looks we’ve been inspired by lately: Carpenter’s nude-and-white design and and Bieber’s cutesy lemon drop style.
In an Instagram post on June 18, the artist shared a tutorial for Carpenter’s nails, noting that she used one coat of OPI’s Passion pink nail lacquer and one coat of the nude Bare My Soul for the neutral base coat. Then, she used the brilliant white Alpine Snow and a dotting tool to stamp the dots in straight but skewed rows.
While Rae also chose white dots, hers were a little bigger and her base coat was a lot brighter. When paired with the hot pink color, the dots provided a perfect “Sleepover Nail” look.

With a mega dose of nostalgia and fun color options, the trends have a lot to do with each other.
“I think the sleepover nail trend is reminiscent of our youth—there’s a deep nostalgia for all of us who grew up in or near the Y2K era,” Rae’s nail artist, Natalie Minerva, previously told Byrdie. “For me personally, this nail trend reminds me of simpler times. I had so much fun as a kid and being able to go back there mentally and emotionally provides a feeling of comfort and safety.”
How to Get the Look
Getting a polka dot manicure of your own couldn’t be easier. If you don’t have a dotting tool, you can just use the tip of a bobby pin. Paint your base coat and let it dry, then dip and dot and dip and dot into the polka dot polish of your choice and seal everything up with a glossy top coat.
Now, what’s next on the polka dot nail art horizon? More giant dots like we saw at New York Fashion Week last fall? Multicolored spots? Look again at one of these manis and think of each dot as an opportunity. For a new shade combo… dot placement concept………… you get the idea.
