Few people are formally taught how to file their own nails. In fact, you probably picked up your technique by watching other people do it. But, there is a method to the fingernail-filing madness. And, it’s a skill you should perfect if, like many of us, you are looking for ways to up your home-mani game.

We asked top nail artists Sarah Giugliano, Mabelyn Martin, and Cassandre Banel for their best tips and tricks. While the result will probably never compete with an in-salon job, with their advice for how to file nails in mind we’d like to think we’ll come pretty close.

Meet the Experts

  • Sarah Giugliano is a celebrity nail artist.
  • Mabelyn Martin is the creative director of the New York City-based nail studio Paintbox.
  • Cassandre Banel is a Seattle-based nail artist and ManiMe partner.

First, Choose a Nail Shape

As with so many things (like haircuts, parts, hair color, makeup methods), embracing what nature gifted you with might be the best call when selecting your nail shape, especially for beginner at-home nail techs. While we always support pursuing whatever look and trend you feel like wearing, newbies might find it easiest to heed their natural nail shape as they learn to file their nails.

“I think shapes are a very personal choice, but to a certain degree, they can also depend on the natural shape of your nail bed,” says Giugliano. Martin has a great shortcut: “Following the shape of where your nail bed ends and free edge begins is a great guide. If it goes straight across, the soft square is best. If it goes deeper into the side walls you should go more round or oval.” In case you need more ideas for which nail shape to go with, we’ve got a few:

Ultimately, round shape nails are probably the best shape for beginners because it follows the natural line of your nail bed. They are also considered the most natural shape which makes them more achievable for an at-home manicure.

Nail Filing Prep

You should only file your nails when they are dry. When our nails are wet they absorb water and filing them in that state can make them more prone to breakage.

Then, all there is to do is gather your tools—a glass file, finer grit buffer, and emery board file—and get to work.
