How to Store Blueberries So You Always Have Them on Hand

Our ethos is (and always has been) about fueling your body by eating well—whatever that looks like for you. Of course, everyone’s diets and specific health concerns are different. But some foods pack a unique health punch that everyone can benefit from—especially when placed in storage containers that help extend their shelf life. And one fruit in particular has so many potential health benefits, dietitians love it as an addition to everyone’s diet.

Blueberries contain anthocyanins, a protective antioxidant that has “been associated with reduced risk of age-related diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and neurologic disease,” said Lisa Andrews, M.Ed., RD, LD, in a previous EatingWell article.

Previous research has shown that eating one-third of a cup of blueberries every day can have a significant impact. So, the next step? Ensuring your blueberries are stored properly, that’s where storage gear comes in.

This large, 11-cup Pyrex container is part of the brand’s Simply Store line, which is our favorite glass container set on the market. Despite the latch-free lid, we found that the container seals well, with zero leakage and exceptional preservation results. (Cut avocados lasted for days in our refrigerator without browning!) Because of that, this $11 container is perfect for storing precious blueberries all season long, whether you pop them in the refrigerator or freezer. Heck, you might even want to pick up a few so you have blueberries for everything. Blueberry Pie–Inspired Overnight Oats, anyone?

How to Store Blueberries in the Refrigerator and Freezer

The best way to store fresh blueberries depends on when you plan on eating them. If you’re ready to gobble them up in a day, leave them on your countertop.

For blueberries that you want to eat fresh but extend their shelf life, store them in the refrigerator, where they’ll keep for at least five days. We recommend removing them from their original packaging and placing them in this Pyrex container. It’s also easy to store thanks to the rectangular shape.

Blueberries also store incredibly well in the freezer, so that’s great news for anyone who plans on picking a whole bunch this summer. Flash-freeze them on a baking sheet first until they’re solid; that way, they’re not clumped together. Then pop them in the Pyrex container where they’ll last for around six months.
