Shilpa Shetty trades in her signature saris for an embroidered peplum kedia jacket

Shilpa Shetty is usually all about the sari, often belted, usually georgette and always pleated to precision. But this time, she’s gone for something less expected.

The look features a white jacket and cowl pants set by Payal Pratap, both in malkha cotton. The jacket has a band collar and is hand-embroidered with multicoloured floral patchworks and sequins, echoing traditional kedia work. The jacket’s peplum hem, which is slightly flared with pleated side panels that drop longer on each side, creates movement while adding dimension to the silhouette. The pants are airy and dhoti-adjacent with easy pleats; wide, rounded legs; and tapered ankles. She finishes it off with retro, striped Carrano pumps—just sharp enough to keep things grounded.

This isn’t a one-off trend. Embroidered jackets have been showing up across collections lately: Falguni Shane Peacock did them long and embroidered at FDCI; Shantnu & Nikhil have their androgynous, almost-military take; and Anamika Khanna creates sculptural statements by juxtaposing breezy saris with boxy blazers. It makes sense since they work across events, don’t rely on heavy jewellery or dupattas and can carry a look on their own.

Her hair was styled in a sleek side-parted bun, showing off the oxidised multi-stoned jhumka with its attached ear cuff. The large diamond-studded ring on her left hand added a not-so-subtle sparkle. Her makeup was simple: bronzed lids, a precise flick of liner, defined cheekbones and a nude lip.

From Vogue’s fashion desk:

“The pairings and proportions are great. The trousers, however, would make a stronger case in a different colour. Perhaps an olive green to add a touch of military, or even a black,” says Vogue India fashion associate Manglien Gangte.
