Bella Hadid Made a Case for Bringing Back the Bumpit

Key Takeaways
- Bella Hadid wore her blonde hair in a Y2K pouf that could only be the work of a Bumpit… or a great hairstylist.
- The voluminous style has been making the rounds in It Girl land, and now we just might have to try it.
If my preferred nail shape didn’t already tell you how old I am, I have a story that will. When I was like 12, I was watching TV with my grandma and saw a commercial for a hair tool that promised to give you sooo much volume. I asked if I could order it, she handed me her credit card (icon), and the Bumpit was on its way to me in five to seven business days.
Did I ever wear the tool when it came? …No. I tried, but those little teeth hurt! Instead, I did my best with hairspray and a teasing comb to get the promised pouf. It usually fell flat, but that’s okay—I might have another chance to perfect the look now.

If the It Girls are any indication, the pouf’s return tour is still going strong. We’ve had sign-offs from the likes of Gabbriette, Keke Palmer, and Nicola Peltz Beckham over the last few years. Bella Hadid once wore a teeny-tiny version, but now she’s going big (by which I mean a little more voluminous).

On Wednesday, August 13, the 28-year-old celebrated the launch of her latest fragrance, ‘Ôrəbella’s Eternal Roots, with a sweet party and very Y2K hair look. Styled by celebrity colorist Jacob Schwartz (he’s the one that made her blonde earlier this year!), the model’s soft locks were pulled back in a half-up, half-down hairstyle that made her even taller thanks to some professional poufing.
“Thank you @jacobschwartzhair,” wrote Hadid in an Instagram story. “We did NOT wake up like this!!”

The voluminous style was secured in the back with some simple pins, and a couple strands of blonde were left out in front to frame the model’s face and add a little more movement. The thing about this pouf, as opposed to its predecessors, is that it’s not stiff. Neither was the ethereal girl wearing it.
The Rest of the Look
Hadid completed the look with a long, white printed dress by Palestinian designer REEMAMI/, sharing a sweet message about the piece’s meaning—and how it connects to her new fragrance—via Instagram.
It’s so important to connect with your roots—from your ancestral homeland to your natural hair color and middle school pouf inspiration.
