Blueberry-Peach Chia Seed Smoothie

Our Blueberry-Peach Chia Seed Smoothie is perfect for a nutrient-packed breakfast and comes together quickly for busy mornings. We layer the smoothie with creamy almond milk, calcium-rich Greek yogurt, and orange juice for your morning shot of vitamin C. Frozen peaches and blueberries add antioxidants, keep this smoothie ice-cold and add thickness. We’ve chosen dates to blend in for natural sweetness, and chia seeds for fiber. Keep reading for our expert tips on ingredient selection, how to layer ingredients in the blender and more.
Tips from the EatingWell Test Kitchen
These are the key tips we learned while developing and testing this recipe in our Test Kitchen to make sure it works, tastes great and is good for you too!
- To achieve a thicker consistency in your smoothies, it’s best to use frozen fruit instead of ice. Ice tends to melt quickly, which can dilute the flavor.
- When preparing your smoothie, add the ingredients in the order listed for the best results, starting with the liquids.
- For a peachier flavor, use fresh peaches instead of frozen. But you will need to add ice to achieve thickness. Another way to enhance the peach flavor is to replace the plain yogurt with Greek-style peach yogurt.
- We recommend using Medjool dates. They are one of the sweetest varieties and complement the fruit we chose for this recipe.
Nutrition Notes
- Greek yogurt helps to add thickness to this smoothie. It also adds protein for muscle health, and calcium for muscle contraction. It may also provide probiotics—to be sure, check the label to see if it contains live, active cultures.
- The almond milk used in this recipe is unsweetened, but has a creamy vanilla flavor. On its own, it doesn’t have a ton of nutrition, but it is fortified with many of the same nutrients found in dairy milk, such as calcium, vitamins A and D, and potassium.
- Frozen peaches and blueberries help provide sweetness and flavor to this smoothie. Both fruits are low in calories, contain fiber and have antioxidants for reducing inflammation.
- Chia seeds are packed with fiber for gut health, and protein for optimal muscle repair. Chia seeds also contain an essential omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid, which is important for good brain health.
