Jennifer Lawrence Made a White T-Shirt Look Anything but Ordinary

There’s how Jennifer Lawrence styles a plain white T-shirt, and then there’s how the rest of us style a plain white T-shirt. Spoiler alert: They are not the same.

Where I and other formulaic dressers might think white tee + jeans = a simple and relaxed weekend outfit, Lawrence would never be so predictable. A pair of well-worn cutoff shorts or baggy jeans will simply not suffice (though she’s not diametrically opposed to the graphic tee and cutoffs look) for our favorite It girl—not even for a casual walk about her New York City neighborhood.

Lawrence is a trendsetter, and as such, she’s always looking for new ways to innovate, to expand the horizons of what we thought possible. She asks not what her white T-shirt can do for her outfit, but what her outfit can do for her white T-shirt. The answer: provide a cool, but not overly pretentious or try-hard, element to her layers of white lace and tomato red linen.

Like most of what Jennifer Lawrence wears day-to-day (and trust me, I would know), this outfit is somehow bold and still minimalist, masculine, but with unexpected flashes of the feminine. Even the way she layers a T-shirt over a lace-trim slip is at once a callback to the lace-cami-under-everything era of the early 2000s (J.Law knows what I’m talking about—she was literally an Abercrombie & Fitch model in 2006), and at the same time, a wholly new and interesting styling choice.

There’s nothing too in your face about the finished look, either. The 36-year-old topped off the outfit with some old favorites: her Polo Ralph Lauren baseball cap, black flip-flops, and the circular onyx pendant she can’t stop wearing.

And not to make a mountain out of a celebrity simply existing in clothing, but there’s something extra sweet about the fact that Lawrence rewears so much of her closet. It’s relatable! It’s good for the environment! It’s economical! Especially when you’re a fan of The Row and your flip-flops cost $600! Anyway, thanks for the inspo, J.Law. See you tomorrow when you are once again photographed wearing an achingly cool look that’s light-years ahead of the curve.
