Katie Holmes Just Perfected the Late-Summer Outfit Formula

The phrase “the dog days of summer” dates back to the Roman empire. When the “the dog star” Sirius (it’s the brightest star in the dog-shaped constellation Canis Major) would appear in the sky near the end of July, they’d call it “dies caniculares” or “days of the dog star.”

Eventually, that became “dog days,” which we now use to describe that hot, uncomfy, good-luck-standing-on-the-subway-platform-without-a-claw-clip period between July and August. In Sweden they just call it rötmånaden, or “rot month.”

Interesting and applicable… but kind of negative, no? These days we’re blessed with air conditioning and get most of our astronomy intel from Chani Nicholas, so the phrase packs less punch. So, maybe we change it, or at least offer an alternate? “The floaty blouse days of summer” is my vote, and the muse was once again a super bright star: Katie Holmes.

Over the weekend, Holmes was spotted in New York filming scenes for her upcoming movie, Happy Hours, with her former Dawson’s Creek costar Joshua Jackson. Though it was toasty in the city, she looked perfectly comfortable costumed in full-length trousers—thanks to the perfect floaty top they were paired with.

The top in question was Dôen’s Traveler Top in the sweet floral pattern “poppy field.” Crafted from a soft and lightweight blend of organic cotton and viscose, the slightly cropped shirt features a scoop neckline and wide sleeve openings. You can open or close its mother-of-pearl front buttons to your liking; adjustable breeziness is important during the floaty blouse days of summer.

Holmes completed the look with a pair of black leather ballet flats—a shoe that anyone can find delight in. Her long locks were worn down in soft waves until she threw them up in a baseball cap-topped bun to beat the heat.

The Floaty Blouse Trend

Holmes isn’t the only one who’s been loving a floaty blouse. Taylor Swift owns the exact same Dôen piece, and we’ve seen plenty of influencers ditch their tiny tops and sundresses for a similar look this summer.
