Millennials Rejoice, Body Glitter Is Back

If you’ve ever had trouble coming up with the right setting when attempting to visit a safe space in your mind, allow me to help you out. Start by closing your eyes and taking a deep breath. Now, imagine: You’re in a compact store inside a busy mall, surrounded by tweens. There are pink walls and heart-shaped mirrors everywhere you look, a spot is open at the potion bar, and there’s enough glitter pigment in the air that you’re being baptized in sparkles.

It might be easier to just tell you you’re in Club Libby Lu? Safe, secure, and right at home.

Though Libby Lu storefronts can no longer be visited in real life, our mind’s eye can always wander there when we need that specific brand of retail comfort. Addison Rae’s debut album Addison, which she described as capturing the vibe of “an R-rated Libby Lu” is there, too.

And if you need a non-mental or audial escape, you can always go the physical comfort route with a self-administered pop star makeover. By which I mean… you can douse yourself in body glitter.

Falling right in line with our love for all things Y2K, body glitter is yet another early aughts beauty trick that’s back in style. It’s the next logical step for a poolside skin girlie who’s getting ready for a night out on the town. Take Megan Thee Stallion at her Hot Girl Summer swimwear fashion show, for example.

Another current body glitter-covered icon is Tyla, who is all about a glowy limb. Miley Cyrus was covered in the stuff while promoting her new album, Something Beautiful, Dua Lipa is no stranger to a puff of glitz, and I can only imagine how much more shimmer we’ll see when Euphoria returns to our TVs.

Body Glitter’s History

The history of body glitter is full of glitz and glam, obviously. Just like today, pop stars were leading the pack when it was popular back in the ’90s. Britney Spears, J.Lo, and Christina Aguilera’s midriffs constantly gleamed.

Off stage, Bath & Body Works’ shimmery gels (watermelon scented, obvi) flew off the shelves for the general population. Personally, I was partial to a giant fluffy brush with built-in shimmer that dumped out as you swept it across your collarbone. It was from Club Libby Lu’s Ashley Tisdale-fronted “Pink Twinkle” line, and it was perfect.
