Ryan Murphy Thinks You’re Wrong About Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s Wardrobe: Here Are Side-by-Side Photos

Well, Ryan Murphy thinks you’re wrong—at least about the test photos and those converse sneakers. In a new interview with Puck, Murphy revealed the screen test was just that—a taste of the overall vision, not the actual wardrobe or wig that will be used during filming.
“It was a work in progress, but I released it, because sometimes you put things out and the paparazzi backs off, so your actors don’t feel attacked,” he said of the Instagram post, later adding, “I was naive about the screen test…I had no idea that people cared as much as they do, but I guess that’s a good thing.”
Obviously, the test did not, in fact, stop the paparazzi from capturing photos from set—and Murphy has some thoughts about those critiques as well. “I look at that picture, and think, ‘Well, people are criticizing it, and they’re wrong, to be quite blunt,’” Murphy said, noting he has access to personal photos of the publicist in Converse before she was famous, sharing that the series is filming in chronological order.
“You can try and copy people’s look to a tee,” Murphy said later in the interview. “Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t. It’s also about money. It’s about how much you’re spending, and we’re spending a tremendous amount of time and money and effort to get her closet correct.”
So, are the critics really wrong or is Love Story doomed to face similar wardrobe critiques as It Ends With Us, which also sparked memes and ire from fans well before the release of the controversial film. Normally, we’d have to wait and see until the show comes out in February 2026, but it sounds like Murphy wants to get ahead of the skeptics.
“We’re going to release a series of short films in the fall, which will show the actual look, and our version of it,” Murphy says. “It’ll be the exact same thing, and in some cases, if we can’t find it, we’ll have something made.”
Until then, here are some side-by-side images from Love Story next to available photos of the real life Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr. Plus extra photos that include some of the historic fashion pieces Murphy promises to include in the show.
