Tips from the EatingWell Test Kitchen

These are the key tips we learned while developing and testing this recipe in our Test Kitchen to make sure it works, tastes great and is good for you too!

  • For quicker preparation, consider using a premade light cream cheese mix or a vegan cream cheese spread.
  • Avoid overfilling the tortillas. Roll them tightly using firm pressure, rather than brute force. You want the ingredients to stay together within the wrap, creating a nice swirl effect when sliced.
  • To achieve a bagel-and-lox flavor, add some chopped capers and finely chopped red onion to the cream cheese mixture.

Nutrition Notes

  • Smoked salmon is an excellent source of protein and heart- and brain-healthy omega-3s. Because smoked salmon is brined or salted, it tends to be high in sodium. Also, because it’s not fully cooked, it is not recommended for children, pregnant women, older adults and people with compromised immune systems.
  • Whole-wheat wraps are made from the entire wheat kernel, which provides gut-loving fiber and helps stabilize blood sugar, especially in combination with the protein and fat from the salmon and spread. Eating more whole grains, including whole-wheat bread and wraps, has been associated with a healthier heart and gut.
  • Spinach brings its leafy green goodness to these roll-ups. It’s loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that support overall health and immunity, including vitamins A and C. The vitamin K in spinach supports strong bones and proficient blood clotting, and the iron is necessary for healthy blood cells.
  • Cucumbers add to the antioxidants in these roll-ups. In addition to being linked to a lower risk of cancer and diabetes, cucumber’s silica and water content are great for your skin.
