The 14 Best Aloe Vera Gels of 2025, Per Dermatologists

For so many of us, aloe vera was one of the first “skincare” products we used. It might have been to soothe a cut, a burn, or overexposure to the sun, but even now, with years and products under our belt, it’s still something we call on regularly because it works. Aloe vera contains polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants, according to board-certified dermatologist Margarita Lolis, M.D. “They inhibit the growth of bacteria and help with wound healing—hence why we reach for it after sunburn—but polyphenols can also help improve skin elasticity and rehydrate the skin,” she adds. So if the unspeakable happens and you slack on the SPF and catch a few too many unwanted rays, it’s a great at-home solution.
Aloe vera is also a useful ingredient for general hydration and nourishment. The plant gel itself is full of vitamins, enzymes, minerals, salicylic acids, and amino acids, making it great for every skin type, and it has anti-inflammatory properties, which Dr. Lolis says can be used to calm the scaliness of dandruff. We evaluated many of the most popular aloe vera gels and lotions based on their active ingredients, their absorption rate, skin feel, and hydration. After consulting with an aesthetician and several dermatologists and considering dozens of options, we landed on these top-rated choices.
What We Like
Lightweight and doesn’t leave sticky residue
Alcohol-free
Organic and free of additives
Boosts skin-beneficial ascorbic acid (vitamin C)
Key Ingredients: Organic aloe vera, vitamin C, seaweed extract | Skin Type: All | Size: 12 oz | Scent: Unscented
Made up of organic, cold-pressed aloe, this lightweight, fast-absorbing gel cools the skin immediately upon application. It also uses natural seaweed extract, which Kim Nichols, M.D., FAAD, and founder of NicholsMD of Greenwich, says helps the product absorb into skin quickly. “I love that it doesn’t leave that dreaded sticky residue either,” she shares. That means you’ll be able to get dressed after slathering it on—without staining your clothes. And while we’re not condoning sunburn, this will work to reduce redness and prevent skin peeling.

Honestly, this stuff makes for a great body treatment whenever the mercury rises. It’s fresh and enriched with ingredients like tea tree to help nourish, soothe, and cool the skin. Still, Sun Bum goes one step ahead with their aloe by adding vitamin E, which Dr. Nichols says helps to restore the natural lipid barrier, as well as provide further protection. The scent is super clean and summery, as well.

What to Look for When Buying an Aloe Vera Gel or Lotion
- Moisturizing Ingredients: It’s always important to assess your skin’s condition and whether aloe will help (or hurt) your goals. According to aesthetician Melanie Grant, aloe vera is a “predominantly water-based succulent plant that has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, making it a wound-healing hero and perfect for those experiencing redness and irritation.” She adds that it also shares the same pH as skin, which makes it gentle enough for those of us prone to irritation. So, unless you have a specific allergy or sensitivity, aloe is great if you want to soothe skin and reduce redness. If your skin is dry and you want extra hydration, look for other moisturizing ingredients along with aloe, like glycerin, camellia oil, and purslane.
- Pure Aloe Vera: Grant suggests that for those who require constant soothing (such as after a sunburn), applying pure gel is a great solution, as the skin will receive the direct benefits in the most potent form. As it heals the skin, itching is soothed, redness is minimized, and hydration is replenished. But with that being said, she explains that it’s still an excellent addition to skincare products, so don’t hesitate if it’s listed as one of the ingredients.
- Value: Since you’ll likely use aloe vera gel all over your body, you’ll want an ample-sized bottle. Fortunately, most aloe vera gels come in generous amounts, though some come in small packages. Consider the price per ounce and your usage before making a purchase.
