The 7 Best Clean Dry Shampoos of 2025, Tested and Reviewed

We’ve said it a thousand times—dry shampoo is undoubtedly one of our beauty arsenal’s most valuable products. High praise, yes, but you’d be hard-pressed to find another staple we’re more reliant upon. (If you’re new to dry shampoo altogether, welcome! Here’s how to use it.) You may want to check out clean options (or DIY recipes) depending on your preference. To be clear, we stand by synthetics (We love science! And it’s often an even more sustainable option), but we also love options. And we want to offer any and all things you may want or need.
With that said, we set out to find some effective and easy-to-use clean formulas. We spent 304 hours testing 19 popular products to find the best clean, dry shampoos on the market, evaluating options based on ease of use, oil absorption, visibility, and overall results. We also looked through hundreds of reviews and tapped NYC-based hair expert Davey Matthew to land on these seven top-rated picks.

Doesn’t cause buildup
Key Ingredients: Tapioca starch, rice starch | Size: 0.53 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes
The powder is fine, blends easily, doesn’t change hair color, and after use, hair looks freshly washed. It isn’t messy, either, as it holds to the super soft brush, which our tester, Chrissy, noted feels like a makeup brush. Chrissy experienced two days of results—she went a week without washing, reapplying every couple of days—and noted that the added volume and texture made styling easier. She loved the long-lasting smell, too, which is a cool, light scent combination of bergamot, yuzu, and lemongrass.
How to Use: Flip your hair over and dab your roots with the fine powder using the included fluffy brush.

Chrissy, tester with super straight and fine hair (type 1A) that gets oily after 24 hours (not shown): “Crown Affair The Dry Shampoo was easy to use, smells great, caused no buildup, and helped me go longer between washes—my hair got lots of body. It is the best dry shampoo I have ever tried.”

Key Ingredients: Tapioca powder, rice starch, fulvic acid | Size: 0.6 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes
Made with a nutrient-rich formula containing over 65 minerals to support the scalp microbiome, our tester, Elise, can attest to how this Act + Acre pick actively strengthens hair while encouraging a healthy scalp (we’re all about scalp care 101)—all while absorbing oil and keeping hair fresh. “The product itself feels plush and nourishing, and my fingertips almost feel like I’ve applied light moisturizer after massaging it into my scalp,” she noted. “It also gave my hair volume without, again, drying out my roots and scalp and making my hair feel crunchy.”
This odorless product works so well that Elise only felt the need to apply it every other day: “It maintained my hair and oil levels for much longer than other aerosol dry shampoos I’ve used.” She noticed any white residue disappeared after rubbing it in—although it may slightly show up on dark hair.
How to Use: Spray six inches away from hair roots, brushing through, then massaging into the scalp. Once I massaged the product gently into my scalp, my hair was visibly and texturally less greasy.

Elise, tester with mostly straight hair with light texture (type 1B) that gets oily in about three days: “It feels like tiny puffs of air, and the product was never dispersed too strongly. It applies the perfect amount of powder, and I can choose to do a minimal refresh.”

Key Ingredients: Binchotan charcoal, biotin, witch hazel, and clay, tapioca, and rice starch complex | Size: 1.7 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes
Even with black hair, our tester, Krisha, found tons of success with this powder dry shampoo, which absorbs quickly with minimal effort, blending in nicely. And our senior editor/fellow dark-haired tester, Lauren Pardee, happily backs this claim. With ingredients that address both the hair and the scalp, this pick truly gets to the root of the issue. An extra-purifying type of Japanese charcoal removes impurities, witch hazel normalizes oil production, and biotin helps support hair growth.
It’s long-lasting, too; Krisha noticed the results lasted one day full of activities (unless she heavily worked out). She even went a full week without washing her hair, solely relying on dry shampoo touchups. Never did her hair feel weighed down or heavy, and she found the added volume and fresh scent to be nice touches.
How to Use: Shake well, twist the cap to show the spray dispenser, part hair, and squeeze the bottle five inches from the root. Let it sit for two minutes before blending with brush or fingers.

Good price and value
Long-lasting
Neutralizes odor
Key Ingredients: Kaolin, rice powder, charcoal, cocoa powder, geranium rose oil, lavender flower oil | Size: 1.8 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes
Surprise, surprise, our tester, Alisa, loved how Handmade Heroes delivered on volume and body without weighing her hair down—she even noticed that the added oomph made everyday styling easier. Yes, the white “chalk-like appearance” of the powder was noticeable on her medium-to-dark hair, but Alisa found it easy to blend, especially when applying sparingly. The formula’s deodorizing bamboo charcoal and refreshing peppermint and eucalyptus delivered refreshed hair.
How to Use: Open the lid, sprinkle onto roots, and blend with fingers or brush.

Alisa, tester with (type 2-3B) hair with average thickness, who notices oily roots after two to three days: “The dry shampoo did well absorbing the oils and grease in my hair. It took just about 10 to 15 minutes to see a difference. The results lasted five days. No maintenance was needed. A little went a long way.”

Key Ingredients: Witch hazel, tapioca starch, bitter orange, pullulan | Size: 2.37 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes
Self admittedly, our tester, Ashley, is very picky about her dry shampoos, but this one came as a pleasant surprise. “I loved the smell, how soft my hair felt, and that it left no residue in my hair,” she shared. We can thank tapioca starch and witch hazel in this formula for alleviating oil, while honey adds body and shine.
Ashley noted there was a learning curve when using this foam the first few times, as dry shampoos normally come in powders and sprays. For one, the product makes the hair look wet at first and it takes about 10 minutes to air-dry, but grabbing a hair dryer helped her move the process along. It’s also worth noting she enjoyed the orange and tangerine scent.
How to Use: Shake well, add one to two pumps into palms, and emulsify with fingertips before massaging into roots, hairline, and nape. Air or blow dry.

Ashley, tester with fine and straight hair with a slight wave (type 1B) and finds that her hair gets oily after 24 hours: “My scalp actually felt nourished after using this product and it still kept it from looking greasy.”

Nutrient packed
Key Ingredients: Corn starch, maranta arundinacea root powder, rice starch, kaolin | Size: 1 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes
Dry shampoo can be a struggle for those with dark hair, but this pick passed our blending test with flying colors. Easy blending helps with the texture, too, as this product may feel a little gritty at first, but rubbing it in or brushing it out turned that into smooth volume, according to Katherine.
But what’s really important is how oil is no match for the quick and effective Odele. Our tester Katherine liked how it puffs out powder—she felt it allowed for a more precise application. Another bonus: If you like fragranced products, this buy has a light, fresh, and neutral scent, with notes of cucumber, oakmoss, and ylang-ylang.
How to Use: Dust at roots and massage in.

Katherine, tester with dark, fine strands but a lot of hair (Type 1A) that gets oily at the end of her second day post-wash: “The product comes out as a white powder, which is stark compared to my dark hair, but it takes absolutely no effort to rub it in and make it blend in. With just a minute or two, you can’t see it anymore.”
What to Look for When Buying Clean Dry Shampoo
- Active Ingredients: Clean dry shampoos must contain effective active ingredients to compete with non-clean products. Fortunately, plenty of clean or nature-derived elements work fantastically well to absorb oil and refresh your hair. Look for ingredients such as clays, starches, and absorbing powders—examples include kaolin, tapioca, arrowroot, charcoal, corn starch, rice starch, and colloidal oatmeal.
- Consistency: Look for a formula with a finely milled consistency, as this allows for easier absorption and distribution of product, said Matthew.
- Hair Color: As for color, look for a formula that is designed to accentuate your hair color. “If you have dark hair, I recommend getting a tinted dry shampoo,” Matthew explained.
How We Tested Clean Dry Shampoos
We believe in testing products like you would use them in real life. To find the best clean dry shampoos, we had testers with different hair types use them on dirty hair, evaluating each one based on its ease of use, oil absorption, visibility, and overall results. Those that performed best appear on this list.
