Tracee Ellis Ross Can’t Stop Wearing Colorful Hair Nets

Key Takeaways
- Tracee Ellis Ross has been rocking fishnet buns in a multitude of colors.
- The fun accessory is fisherman aesthetic-coded—one of summer 2025’s biggest trends.
Tracee Ellis Ross is a superstar. I would say she got it from her mama, but I know the pizzazz is innate to her, too. She gives us an equal amount of style inspiration, after all.
Most recently, the 52-year-old brought a very summery hair accessory to the top of our minds. Sticking with the times (we’re all about the fisherman aesthetic this year!), Ross has been rocking colorful hair nets for the last week or so—and proving they’re easier to work into your wardrobe than you’d think.

On Monday, July 21, Ross was photographed in New York City wearing her dark hair pulled back in a tight bun. A knit Yves Klein-blue net was wrapped around the updo, turning the bun into an accessory of its own.
Prior to the blue ballerina look, the Pattern Beauty founder attended the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Summit with an aqua-shaded net and funky side bun by celebrity hairstylist Chuck Amos. Her hair wasn’t as tightly contained as it was for the most recent style, letting the net work around its organic shape instead. Another art piece!

Then, perhaps most interestingly, there was a full-head covering red net that she wore. Once again, her hair was pulled back in a high, tight bun. But this time, the net captured it before making its way forward to her hairline. Amos also offered a cream-colored net for another back-of-head sculptural look that he called a “cyber bun.”
“There’s a theme,” wrote the actress in an Instagram post capturing the bright crimson style. Given her lipstick and the bottom of her heels, I think the theme is red. But it could also be hairnets in general.
The Fisherman Aesthetic
While hairnets are nothing new from both a style and function perspective, their place in Ross’s wardrobe is very fisherman aesthetic-coded. Earlier this year, the seafaring style came for our nails. It was only a matter of time before our hair got the same treatment.

You know what they say… teach a girl to fish, and she’ll eat for a lifetime.
