Feeling bloated? These are the 3 teas that can help

It was during a trip to Tangier a few years ago that I became truly obsessed with tea and its numerous health benefits. Over time, I’ve found that there’s a perfect tea for whatever I need: whether it’s to help me fall asleep, to reduce stress, to give me a big burst of energy when I need it, or even to combat my chronic fluid retention. Most importantly, I’ve found that the right cup of tea can eliminate the heavy, sluggish feeling I often experience after meals. It’s no wonder nutritionists—and even Victoria Beckham—turn to certain teas to ease bloating and restore balance.

1. Hibiscus flower tea

When to drink it: after eating

As Laura Parada, nutritionist and author of the book What Moves Us to Eat Like This?, explained to me, the fruit acids present in the hibiscus flower act as a mild laxative, and thanks to their digestive effect, can help to combat heartburn, stomach cramps, gastroenteritis and gas build-up.

“The antioxidant properties of the hibiscus flower (also known as Jamaican hibiscus) protect against free radical damage,” she says. “It also has anti-inflammatory properties due to its polyphenol [plant compounds recognised for their anti-ageing and antioxidant properties] content.”

2. Ginger tea

When to drink it: between meals

One of the best-known infusions for relieving stomach discomfort and feeling bloated is ginger tea. It relaxes the digestive system and helps to eliminate the rumbling and grumbling that can occur even when you feel satiated. Parada says the best time to drink it is between or after meals, to improve digestion or help with feelings of fullness. “In addition,” she explains, “ginger tea can help relieve nausea, prevent over-eating and even help ward off upset stomachs.”

3. Mint tea

When to drink it: after your evening meal

“Mint is a plant with carminative properties that protects the intestinal mucosa and acts as a natural anti-inflammatory,” eco-chef Vanessa Lodasa explains to Vogue. “This can all help eliminate feeling bloated and unwanted pain. It can also stimulate the production and expulsion of bile, which allows for better fat digestion. All of this contributes to improved digestion and less bloating.” Because mint tea doesn’t contain caffeine or any other stimulant, it’s a great option to round off your day before lights out.
